Portfolio day!

It was fun. I only lasted through two schools (FIT and Parsons) because waiting in line for two hours for FIT and then another 40 minutes for Parsons was so exhausting. :( But I got good advice from both schools.

It's weird that people start lining up hours before the portfolio reviews start. I did it too, but still... there must be a better system.

I'm still around, just busy with school.
P.P.S. Usually couldn't care less about pop culture, but poor Taylor Swift! After I heard about what happened I watched a tiny clip of it from the VMA's, and the look on her face.... ;_;

I have an art mentor. :)

The teacher of one of my summer art classes kept pushing me last month to get in contact with this one art school graduate because she shares some traits with me (Modern Orthodox Jew, interested in illustration), but I didn't have the time or courage until last night to e-mail her. With the help of some making-contacts-savvy relatives I awkwardly typed up a few sentences and she replied twenty minutes later with three huge paragraphs of advice, ramblings about art school, and invitations to visit her some time. She's so cute! And her art style is very different from mine, but very pretty. I think I could learn a lot from her.

You Gotta Talk About It

Why didn't I know about this show before?

It's so cute! Really funny, and a little bit slow sometimes, but you have to expect that with a preschool show. The great thing about it is that the main characters really seem like they have fun on set. It reminds me a lot of the Upside-Down Show (what ever happened to that show anyway?), only with more music.

(Hi, my name is Aurora, and I am addicted to children's TV.)

A few random musings 'cause I haven't updated in a while.

I finished The Boy in the Striped Pajamas on the train yesterday (I recommend the book to everyone, by the way; it's not quite historically accurate but it stills gets its intended message across and it's well-written) and all the books I'm still reading are too big to carry around the city. So to keep myself busy on the train I took out my ipod and watched The Great Divide. I just felt like watching an episode I don't know by heart. But it hasn't gotten any better since the first time I watched it. :(

I stopped at a book store for about 15 minutes this morning 'cause my train came in early and I read the picture book Eloise. It's so cute! Why didn't anyone read me this book when I was little?

Woohoo, as of about an hour ago I can officially take all the classes I want for senior year. :D And, even though a lot of my classtime is used up by noncredit art classes, my classes add up to the exact number of credits I need to graduate.

Today my foundation teacher was all, "If you don't have the right art supplies tomorrow I'll kick you out and send you to an art store during class. In college I would kick you out of the entire course!"

So after classes were over I headed over to a cheap art store next to a subway stop. I went in and asked for a small pack of coloraid paper and a nice staff person found it for me. Then I took it to the register and the guy said, "Student ID?" Which meant I was going to get a discount. Then the chasier said, "Seventy one oh five."

So I said, "What?"

And he said, "Seventy one oh five."

I had 68 dollars on me. After a quick rerun of the scene because the cashier said their might be a cheaper pack, I was told the next smallest size cost almost $100. So I stood in the store while all the staff members looked on me with pity as I called anyone and everyone I knew who was close by and had a credit card.

Finally someone agreed to buy it for me before they commuted home, so I went onto the subway to go towards the train station.

Only I got on the wrong subway.

So then I found a way back to the right subway and I used up the last ride on my metrocard. When I got to the train station I was starving but my train was scheduled to leave in five minutes so I went straight to it and just ate the plum I had in my bag. A few seconds after I sat down, half the lights went out (so did the air conditioning, I found out later). The intercom guy said things like "we're having difficulties, our technical staff is working on it" and "you can go to the express train if you're heading to one of these places - I'm sorry, I don't have an easy A for you" and after fifteen minutes we were told to get off and move to another train.

Two more weeks of this...

First day of art classes today. The morning class was great. Then my afternoon teacher dragged us all over the city to buy supplies (very expensive supplies, might I add :|) and look at a supposedly famous guy's sketchbook collection (it was very creepy - he was obsessed with his past girlfriends and King Lear). By the end of the class I had $2 in my wallet, blisters on my feet, and charcoal stuck in my fingernails, and it took me another hour to commute home.

But one of my best friends instant messaged me nearly the minute I got onto the computer, and it's 2:00 in the morning where he lives, so that was nice of him. :)

Tomorrow we're going to sit and the park and draw homeless people. Yippee.

So I'm supposed to be doing productive things right now, but I don't feel like it. The weather's too nice. I start summer art classes in a week and that's productive enough for me.

I'm thinking that during August I might try Scott McCloud's 24-hour comic challenge, just to say I got something done this summer. Will have to get some friends to do it at the same time as me though, otherwise it'll be boring.

Three days and counting till I get to see the TLA trailer on the big screen...

I am so bored.

I'm determined to make it to school tomorrow or I'll lose my mind from not being able to do anything. Drawing, writing, eating and even walking make me feel sick.

So as I could do nothing the past two days besides for sit at a computer chair/couch in front of my TV and blow my nose, here are some comments on things I've recently watched:

The Avatar finale. There are so many things I missed last year when I watched it! All the beauty of how the writers differentiated the good guys from the bad guys. Now when I think of the things we used to argue about on ASN (whether Aang should have killed Ozai or not, why Katara was the one to defeat Azula, etc) it makes me wonder why I spent so much time making myself vulnerable to other fans' subjectivity and thus ruined some incredible scenes for myself.

The theatrical trailer for UP. Eee, this movie looks so cute! I love Carl, he's not like any other character Disney's done before and I think he'll be really fun.

The trailer for Where the Wild Things Are. Whoa, it's coming out on my birthday! I know what I'm doing to celebrate now. 8)

About to have a blackout from a thunderstorm so I'll stop now.

urrrgh I hate colds. I can't even sip my tea (which is only hot water and sugar because I'm on a caffeine free diet) without dripping gunk in it.

And I could hardly sleep at all last night because I kept coughing and sneezing. My friend was staying over so for a little while in the night she entertained me by talking about the BSG finale (she only watched it for the first time last night), but eventually she fell asleep and I just lay in bed waiting for daylight.

Today my art teacher and I had this conversation in class:

Him: If I hear one more person tell me about "that great Battlestar Galactica finale" I'm going to shoot myself!
Me: :(
Him: It's worse than daytime soap operas!
Me: But it's good drama AND awesome space battles. What more could you want?
Him: I prefer Ghost Hunters. Back when I was a kid... *lapses into retelling of the story about the time he lived in an old spooky house and a ghost tucked him into bed*
Me: *distracts him*

I left it alone 'cause I don't mind being labled a cartoon lover (I did plenty to turn friends into Avatar fans) but a soap opera/sci fi lover takes it too far. People who don't know BSG will always consider it one of those, so...

Cross-posting from dA:

It's been nearly a year (359 days) since primeprotects last contacted anyone from ASN. I don't know about anyone else, but I'm still waiting for her to come back and I miss her dearly. It's shocking to know that it's been so long since she disappeared. She, KF, and I had a bond that transcended the usual ASN "clubs" and it hurts to think that we'll probably never have that again.

So in honor of Prime, here are a couple Sukiteer-themed arts. (RRA snuck his way in between the times these two were done.)

The Three Sukiteers by Kyoshi Fan

The Sukiteers by Ambiguity7

P.S. I've been trying for a while to sum up my feelings about BSG before the finale airs and it's been hard. So I think I'll just say WOOHOO FINALE :D and SOB FINALE D: and leave it at that.
